iPhone Insurance: Peace of Mind

iPhone Insurance: Peace of Mind

Sunday, July 21, 2013

Getting insurance on an iPhone or iPad is a lot like whether or not to buy a case in some respects. Or like playing the odds in Vegas. Breaking a screen isn't the end of the world - many times it can be repaired for less than $100. The thing that will really get you is if it's a total loss (lost/stolen/run over/circuit board damaged/etc). In this instance, you'd need to get a new phone but the problem is that you won't qualify for subsidized pricing (unless its been a while and you're eligible for an upgrade - but if that's the case, your warranty likely would have already expired). Depending on the size, an unsubsidized iPhone could cost up to $850. This is where the warranty would come in handy. You could probably find a used one on eBay for less but who knows where that one has been in terms of water damage, scratches, etc. according to the numbers, you'd have to cash in on a warranty claim once in 4-8 years (depending on your model of iPhone) to break even. The way I look at it, even if I don't cash in, I'm a winner for having the warranty because I didn't spend a single minute stressing out during that time period. It's hard to put a price on peace of mind.
